Trio win through

Posted on: Wed 08 Sep 2010

England and Sweden's under 21 sides both got the required results to reach the play-off stages of the UEFA 2011 under 21 championship.

In Colchester, England needed to win and win well over Lithuania to stand a chance of being one of the four best runners up to qualify, and at half-time when the scores were goalless it looked ominous for the young lions.

But a second half brace from Danny Welbeck with a Marc Albrighton goal in between saw Stuart Pearce's side claim a 3-0 win and a play-off place.

Rovers duo Phil Jones and Frank Fielding both started and played the full match.

Also making it through to the last ten were Sweden who left it late against Bulgaria in Lovech.

With qualification a near formality, Sweden scored a 90th minute winner to finish top of Group 6 to calm the nerves.

Rovers midfielder Martin Olsson played the full match for the Swedes.

The 14 teams to reach the play-offs are: Romania, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Sweden, Croatia, Ukraine, Greece, Scotland, Spain, England, Belarus and Iceland.

The play-offs will take place between 9 and 13 October, with the seven winners joining hosts Denmark in the final tournament next June.
