Senegalese striker Mame Biram Diouf scored on his Rovers debut as Sam Allardyce's men warmed up for the new Premier League season with a 1-1 draw away to Hearts.
The 22-year-old, on loan from Manchester United, was on the mark within 15 minutes of coming on as a second-half substitute.
Spaniard Suso Santana had earlier given the SPL side the lead.
Allardyce named a line-up of mixed experience with the following day's trip to Celtic also in his thoughts.
Diouf's namesake El-Hadji was in a starting line-up which saw young striker Nick Blackman leading the attack, supported by Junior Hoilett.
Chris Samba and Ryan Nelsen were at the heart of a back four which also included Lars Jacobsen and Martin Olsson, with Samba named captain. Steven Nzonzi, Keith Andrews and Morten Gamst Pedersen were all in midfield, with Diouf pushing forward down the right at every opportunity. Mark Bunn was chosen to start in goal, with Jason Brown on the bench.
Hearts, who start their SPL campaign at home to St Johnstone, next weekend, included former Rovers trainee Ian Black.
The hosts had the first opportunity of the game when Arvydas Novikovas shot narrowly wide of Bunn's right-hand post from just inside the box.
But Rovers went desperately close a few minutes later when a downward header by Pedersen from a right-wing cross by Diouf was tipped over by keeper Janos Balogh and from the resulting corner, Andrews had a shot cleared off the line.
Hearts went ahead on 22 minutes when a shot from the edge of the box by Santana took a wicked deflection and looped over Bunn into the left-hand corner of the net.
Mame Biram Diouf came on for the start of the second half as a straight swap for Blackman, but it was Hearts who had the first chance after the break when a free-kick by Craig Thomson was well tipped over by Bunn.
But on the hour mark, new boy Diouf was on the mark as he streered a low shot in to the net from the left-hand side of the box after Pedersen had touched on a cross from the right by El-Hadji Diouf.
Chances were few and far between after that, but six minutes from time, Hoilett launched onto a promising long run into the box, but was unable to release the ball to Mame Biram Diouf before he was tackled.
