Wembley despair for Gunning and Marshall

Posted on: Sun 30 May 2010

GAVIN Gunning and Marcus Marshall both saw Wembley action but Rotherham were ultimately defeated in League Two play-off final 3-2 by Dagenham & Redbridge.

Defender Gunning started the game, and almost had a hand in the opening goal when his header from a corner was met by Pablo Mills but he headed just wide.

It was a bright opening by Rotherham who also rattled the woodwork, but the Daggers hit back and took the lead through Paul Benson who controlled the ball well before turning and firing into the back of the net.

The Millers hit back within a minute when a Gunning throw caught Dagenham napping and Ellison crossed for Ryan Taylor to head home.

The second half was just as pulsating and again it was Dagenham & Redbridge who took the lead, Danny Green firing them back in front on 56 minutes. But as before the lead didn't last long, Taylor getting his second goal of the game to equalise five minutes later.

But on 70 minutes Jon Nurse gave the Daggers the lead for the third time in the match and that proved ultimately to be the winner.

Marcus Marshall was given his Wembley bow when he came on with 13 minutes to go, the Rovers forward going agonisingly close with a header from his first touch.

Rotherham threw everything forward in the final minutes but it was Dagenham & Redbridge celebrating promotion at the final whistle.
