Last minute heartache for Scots

Posted on: Sat 22 May 2010

Grant Hanley's Scotland under 19 side lost 2-1 to Belgium in Croatia on Friday evening.

The Scots went into the match off the back of a 4-0 win over Montenegro, and victory over Belgium would have given them a great chance to progress from the Elite stage to the finals, but an injury time goal all but put paid to those chances.

The Belgians took the lead with 21 minutes to go when substitute Ziguy Badibanga scored from close-range, but Scotland, captained by the Rovers defender Hanley, drew level with three minutes remaining courtesy of a goal from Bradden Inman.

But two minutes into stoppage time René Sterckx y Calle grabbed the all-important winner for Belgium.

With Croatia defeating Montenegro 3-0, they only need a point against Scotland on Monday to qualify for July's finals in France.

For the Scots, a win over Croatia, combined with Belgium failing to beat Montenegro, would see them reach the finals.
