International diary

Posted on: Fri 21 May 2010

For a host of Blackburn Rovers players the season is far from over.

For as well as the forthcoming World Cup finals in South Africa, there are various international friendlies, under 21 matches and under 19 qualifiers taking place over the next few weeks.

This Friday afternoon sees defender Grant Hanley on duty for Scotland's under 19 side. They take on Belgium in Vrbovec, Croatia looking to build on their 4-0 Elite group win over Montenegro on Wednesday.

Monday morning UK time sees the Tasman grudge match as Australia take on New Zealand in Melbourne. Vince Grella, Brett Emerton and Ryan Nelsen all on duty.

Later that day Hanley's Scotland play their final group against Croatia.

Tuesday 25th sees two games involving Rovers players. Zurab Khizanishvili's Georgia face Cameroon in Linz, Austria, whlst Keith Andrews is in the Republic of Ireland squad that takes on Paraguay in Leinster.

End of season star Phil Jones is on England under 19 duty on Wednesday 26th as they face Ireland's under 19s in the Ukraine.

Denmark kick off their World Cup preparations on the 27th with a game in Aalborg against Senegal.

Friday 28th sees Keith Andrews and Phil Jones back in action, Ireland facing Algeria, England's under 19s against Bosnia.

The following day Morten Gamst Pedersen gets involved in the international action as Norway have a friendly game in Oslo against Montenegro. Whilst Ryan Nelsen's New Zealand travel to Europe to face Serbia.

Martin Olsson will hopefully make his senior debut the same day for Sweden against Bosnia & Herzegovina.

England's under 19s play their final Elite group match on Monday 31st against hosts Ukraine in Borodinka.

Tuesday 1st June sees Rovers players go head to head when Denmark take on Australia in Johannesburg, 24 hours later Morten Gamst Pedersen's Norway play their second summer friendly against the Ukraine.

Slovenia is the venue for another New Zealand warm-up match on Friday June 4th. Then Martin Olsson switches back to Sweden's under 21s for a qualifier against Israel.

Saturday June 5th sees two matches in Johannesburg involving Rovers players. Australia face the USA whilst Denmark face hosts South Africa.

Martin Olsson's Sweden play their second under 21 qualifier on June 9th before the final friendly match of the summer sees Ryan Nelsen in action against Chile in Nelspruit.

Nikola Kalinic had been scheduled to join up with Croatia's national side for their friendly matches against Wales and Estonia, but picked up a thigh strain whilst on under 21 duty.

Gavin Gunning's involvement in the League Two play-offs means he misses out for the Republic of Ireland's under 19s. Also absent from that squad are Callum O'Connor and Aaron Doran who both have shoulder injuries.
