Mixed night for Andrews

Posted on: Wed 03 Mar 2010

IT was a mixed night for Keith Andrews at the Emirates Stadium as Brazil defeated the Republic of Ireland 2-0.

The Rovers midfielder was given the tough task of shackling AC Milan star Kaka on the night, and whilst he upset the Brazilian with some close attention, it was the Samba side who had the last laugh.

After a first half in which Ireland troubled their opponents, Brazil took the lead just before the break when Robinho beat the Irish offside trap and his centre was diverted into his own net by the unfortunate Andrews.

Brazil were much the stronger side in the second with Robinho doubling their lead with 14 minutes remaining at the Emirates.

"I think we played fantastic stuff in the first half and were probably the better team," said Rovers midfielder Andrews.

"It was definitely a game of two halves. We stifled them in the first half and we really deserved to be 1-0 up rather than 1-0 down.

"The second half was maybe a case of them upping their game, we didn't play as well and we were a little bit casual at times, myself included."

Andrews played the full match, earning his 13th cap for Ireland.
