Trio make Elite stage

Posted on: Thu 19 Nov 2009

Rovers' trio of Irish under 19 representatives were in action in San Marino over the last week with three UEFA Qualification matches.

Defender Gavin Gunning and midfielders Gearoid Morrissey and Aaron Doran were out in the Mediterranean looking to help Ireland book their place in the Elite round next May.

The first took place last Friday against the hosts San Marino, with Ireland in dominant mood.

They made light work of their opponents winning the game 5-0.

In their second match Aaron Doran was on target for the Irish from the penalty spot as they defeated Albania 2-0.

Their third and final match saw Ireland and Italy go head-to-head, and with both teams on six points from their two matches, the winners would top the group.

But although Ireland put up a spirited display, Italy were victorious 2-0 to win the group, with Ireland progressing as runners up.

Doran, Gunning and Morrissey played in all of the under 19 matches.
