Back with a bang

Posted on: Tue 10 Nov 2009

JASON Roberts was delighted to get back on the pitch and back on the scoresheet at the weekend.

The 31-year-old grabbed his 148th and 149th senior goals on Saturday as Rovers came from a goal behind to defeat Portsmouth 3-1.

The Rovers striker had been laid-low with the flu virus that had swept through the camp, but came back with a bang after being part of a double substitution at half time, that saw the Lancashire club get their fifth consecutive home win.

After a poor first half showing both Roberts and McCarthy were thrust into the thick of it to good effect.

"It was a bold move by the manager," Roberts told Radio Rovers.

"I thought Franco put in a great shift in the first half but it seemed like he needed a bit more support so the change was good.

"I've not played so much recently, so I was just glad to get on the scoresheet."

After such a an impressive showing, Roberts is now hoping to get an extended run in the starting eleven.

"As a striker playing at this level you know what you are capable of," added Roberts.

"I've been playing in this league for a long time and I know that if I get the games and get the opportunities then I'll score goals, as my record would suggest.

"So it was good to get the opportunities and put them in and I hope there is more where that came from.

"We had a hard month last month and I think the situation conspired to make it look a lot worse than they were although the results didn't look great

"But now we are playing against mere mortals again, we've a chance to get something from games, and if we keep playing like that and imposing ourselves on the opposition then I think we are going to have a good season."
