Report: Hajduk Split 1 v Rovers 0
Rovers ended their travels on the continent with a 1-0 defeat to Hajduk Split.
After the 2-2 draw in Bolzano against AS Roma, Sam Allardyce's side followed that up with a goalless 45 minutes against CD Nacional, but against home side Hajduk, Rovers came unstuck.
The Croatian side's league season starts in just seven days time and the difference showed at times as Hajduk Split created a host of chances in the opening stages of the game.
But the home side had to settle for just the one goal, as crowd favourite and Bosnian international Senijad Ibricic saw his shot deflect past a caught out Paul Robinson.
Rovers' best chance of the 45 minute match fell to Jason Roberts. The striker showed his trademark strength to turn his man in the box, but his shot was well saved by Subasic and Diouf saw his follow-up blocked.
At the death from Keith Andrews' free-kick Gael Givet saw a glancing header well saved.
The result meant that it was the side from Madeira, Nacional who came first place, Hajduk second with Rovers third.
In comparison to the first game against Nacional, the second match for Rovers was a much livelier affair, helped in no small part by the vociferous Hajduk fans behind Paul Robinson's goal.
Despite the firecrackers and flares it was Rovers who had the first meaningful attack of the game when Martin Olsson centred from the left towards Jason Roberts, but his marker got the final touch to send the ball behind.
Olsson was one of three players to start both games, Benni McCarthy also started this game, whilst Keith Andrews showed his versatility by playing at right back following on from his centre midfield role against Nacional.
But it was the new central pairing of Gael Givet and Ryan Nelsen that came to Rovers' rescue on 5 minuteswhen Tomasov bore down on goal, Givet made the challenge and Nelsen completed the clearance.
That chance saw the fans set off more flares and firecrackers, but it was at the smoke free end of the ground that Rovers were attacking that should have seen the opening goal of the game on ten minutes. Jason Roberts turned well in the area, but chose to take the shot with his right foot and Subasic in the Hajduk goal was able to block, El Hadji Diouf raced onto the rebound, but he saw his effort deflect wide.
Two minutes later however and it was the home fans celebrating as their side took the lead. There seemed little on through the smoke for Bosnian forward Senijad Ibricic but somehow he found the bottom left corner of Paul Robinson's goal, with the Rovers stopper caught out. The ball may have taken a deflection on its way to goal as Robinson was moving towards the opposite side of the goal.
Boosted by their 12th minute goal the home side continued to take the game to Rovers.Captain Srdan Andric shot well wide when well placed, whilst Ibricic and Tomasov both wasted further chances.
Rovers improved as the game went on, Roberts and Diouf troubling the back line, whilst Olsson's crosses from the left had to be dealt well by the Split defence.
Gael Givet almost put Rovers level on 43 minutes when from a Keith Andrews free-kick he glanced the ball goalwards, but Subasic in the Hajduk goal saved on the line.
But as with the first game, they couldn't turn the possession into chances.
Rovers return to the UK on Sunday, and will spend the week training at Brockhall before they travel to Elland Road, Leeds on Saturday 25th July.
ROVERS: Robinson, Andrews, Olsson, Dunn, Nelsen (c), Givet, Roberts, Doran, McCarthy (sub Nzonzi 27 mins), Diouf, Pedersen.
