So close for South Africa

Posted on: Fri 26 Jun 2009

South Africa came so close to causing another Confederations Cup upset until a Daniel Alves free-kick two minutes from time saw Brazil claim their place in Sunday's final.

In a closely contested semi-final, South Africa couldn't quite pull off a shock result to match that of the USA who disposed of Spain 24 hours earlier.

Against a largely below-par Brazilian side, the Bafana Bafana gave as good as they got as each side exchanged changes, and as the game wore on it seemed to be heading towards extra-time.

But a mis-timed challenge on the edge of his own box by former Rover Aaron Mokoena saw the Brazilians earn a free-kick from which Barcelona defender Alvez took full advantage to fire Dunga's side through to a Sunday final against the USA.

Elrio van Heerden did make his first appearance of the Confederations Cup, appearing in the 93rd minute, but had no time to have an impact on the game.

The Rovers winger will be hoping for a little more game time on Sunday when South Africa take on Spain in the third place play-off.

Another Rover who'll be hoping to put in an appearance on the international stage this evening will be Martin Olsson.

Sweden's under 21s take on their England counterparts in the UEFA Under 21 Championship semi-final in Gothenburg. Olsson has featured twice as a substitute so far in the competition.
