Olsson plays his part

Posted on: Wed 24 Jun 2009

Martin Olsson was involved as the Sweden under 21 team booked their place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Under 21 Championships on Tuesday evening.

The Rovers left-sider made his second appearance of the tournament when he came on with ten minutes to go as Sweden defeated Serbia 3-1 to reach the last four of the competition.

Tournament top scorer Marcus Berg got things rolling for the Swedes' turning sharply to fire the hosts in front after just seven minutes. Just eight minutes later the lead was doubled when Berg converted a hotly contested penalty.

Serbia pulled a goal back through Kacar on 27, but those arrears were reduced for just two minutes as Toivonen restored Sweden's two-goal advantage after yet more hesitant defending.

As well as poor defending, indiscipline proved costly for the Serbs as they saw two men red-carded to cap a miserable night.

In the other Group A match Italy eventually progressed through, but they were given a mighty scare by Belarus. The Italians eventually winning 2-1 to secure top spot of the group.

The semi-finals see England play Sweden in Gothenburg, whilst Italy take on Germany in Helsingborg. Both ties take place on Friday June 26th.
