Players return unscathed

Posted on: Fri 03 Apr 2009

Sam Allardyce is pleased to learn that none of the players who were away on international duty have picked up knocks as he prepares his squad for the visit of Tottenham to Ewood Park on Saturday.

The international week saw seven of Sam's squad jet off to all corners of the globe to represent their respective countries, but all have returned unscathed.

"We've had good news on that front," revealed Sam. "We are just monitoring the fatigue levels but obviously the players that have been away have been on international duty and have come back without any serious injuries to not have them available for selection on Saturday.

"It is an early kick-off on Saturday which doesn't help both sides but we have to face it and get on with the situation and use the moment and the need to go out there and give your best for as long as you possibly can. And if fatigue sets in later on then it is down to me to have a look and if I need to change it for that reason then I can change it."

But whilst Rovers have reported no fresh injuries from those away, the injuries to Roque Santa Cruz and David Dunn continue to cause concern.

"Roque isn't going to make it and I don't think David Dunn is as he's had a reoccurrence of a slight achilles injury and it hasn't moved away so I think we are going to have to investigate that a bit more to find out the extent of the damage.

"So that is a big disappointment, that is four key players we'll have missing. We all tend to forget with the long term injuries to Brett Emerton and Steven Reid and now Roque and Dunny on top of that is a significant talented number to omitted from the squad.

"But all clubs have to suffer the injuries at some stage of the season, we are doing that at the moment, but I'm confident in the squad that we have available to look forward to the game and hopefully to turn good performances into wins."

One player who does return from injury however is Vince Grella. The Australian international has missed the last three games with a groin problem, but the midfielder is now back in training, but without any match practice he may not be considered from the start.

"Vince has joined in training this week, but he hasn't had a competitive game though, but he can join in and be a part of the squad," added Allardyce.

The manager is expected to select from: Robinson, Ooijer, Samba, Nelsen, Givet, Diouf, Mokoena, Warnock, Pedersen, Roberts, McCarthy, Brown, Tugay, Grella, Khizanishvili, Andrews, Villanueva, Simpson, Treacy, Olsson.
