International round-up

Posted on: Mon 30 Mar 2009

Aaron Mokoena lifted the Nelson Mandela Challenge trophy for the second year running after leading South Africa to a 2-1 win over Norway at the weekend.

The hosts opened the scoring in the seventh minute through Bernard Parker, but Norway drew level 20 minutes later when Rovers winger Morten Gamst Pedersen dispatched a deflected free-kick.

But it was Aaron who claimed the bragging rights, when substitute Siphiwe Tshabalala smashed home a stoppage-time winner.

On World Cup qualification duty, André Ooijer played the full 90 minutes as Holland strengthened their grip on Group 9 with a 3-0 win over Scotland.

In Group 8, Keith Andrews also played the full game, as the Republic of Ireland were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Bulgaria, whilst Zurab Khizanishvili's Georgia's slipped to the foot of the table following a surprise 2-1 defeat away to Cyprus.

In friendly action, Ryan Nelsen's New Zealand lost 3-1 away to Thailand in Bangkok.
