Roque not ready for Paraguay

Posted on: Fri 20 Mar 2009

Rovers boss Sam Allardyce is reluctant to see star striker Roque Santa Cruz link up with his national team, as he is not yet fit to play for his club.

Roque has been named in the Paraguay squad for two forthcoming World Cup qualifiers away to Uruguay and Ecuador, despite missing Rovers' last two league games with a knee injury.

And Big Sam is eager to see the 27-year-old remain on home soil instead of making the long journey to South America.

"We will obviously tell them that he is not capable of travelling," said the manager.

"They will pay a visit I think and we will have that discussion, but we are not considering Roque as any likelihood of being fit to play a game of football for us until Tottenham at the very earliest and it could be beyond that really.

"So I can't see him going to Paraguay, because he's not capable of playing."
