Ireland defeated

Posted on: Mon 19 May 2008

Nigeria proved to be too strong as the Republic of Ireland under 21s were defeated 3-1 in their second match of the Intercontinental Cup in Malaysia.

The pre tournament favourites raced into a 2-0 lead before half-time and added a third moments after the restart.

Nigeria were reduced to ten men after Rovers forward Alan Judge was brought down when through on goal, eventually the young Irish side made that advantage tell when they claimed a late consolation from Billy Clarke.

Don Givens had made seven changes from the side that defeated hosts Malaysia on Thursday, Alan Judge the only Rovers representative in the starting eleven.

Keith Treacy came on as a late substitute, and had a hand in Ireland's goal, Eddie Nolan was an unused substitute.

Ireland play their final group match this afternoon against Iraq.
