Hughes' selection headache

Posted on: Fri 04 Apr 2008

IT is the kind of 'headache' all managers enjoy ... and Mark Hughes is certainly not complaining.

All being well, the Rovers boss could have a near full complement of players at his disposal for tomorrow's crucial encounter against Spurs.

Defender Chris Samba, who scored the winner in this season's reverse fixture at White Hart Lane, is available for selection again after serving his one-match suspension against Reading.

And Aussie ace Brett Emerton, who has missed the last two games with the recurrence of a niggling groin injury, will also be pushing for a place in the starting line-up after retuning to full training.

"We've got a number of players back and we are looking in decent shape," said Hughes

"The medical room is quite free at the moment - touch wood. At this time of the year you expect to have maybe a few walking wounded, which, in fairness, we have, but not any great amount. So we've got a lot of options at the weekend.

"We've got Chris Samba back from suspension and Brett Emerton is likely to be available for selection as he has trained well this week, so we hope is going to be okay."

Captain Ryan Nelsen, who returned to the first-team fold at the Madejski Stadium last weekend, will also be keen to make his first home appearance since mid-January following a 10-week lay-off with a scar tissue problem.

And Hughes, who has been without almost every defender through injury and suspension at some stage this season, admits it will make a pleasant change to everyone available.

"Ryan has done okay. He is obviously getting better with every training session and the game last week will obviously bring him on a great deal. He is looking really strong and powerful.

"It isn't very often that I've been able to pick on the full compliment of defenders that I have at my disposal. So at the weekend it'll be a nice change. You might think it is a problem, but it is a nice problem.

"Whenever I pick a team for Blackburn Rovers I upset somebody - that is part of the job. So it's not something I'll lose sleep over. I always pick a team that I think will overcome the opposition and that is what I'll try to do again at the weekend."

Tickets for Saturday's match will be on sale right up until kick-off. Prices start from just £15 for Adults, £10 for Seniors and Club 16-21 Members and £7 for Juniors. Pre-order your tickets online, or reserve over the phone on 0871 222 1444 and collect on the day of the game.
