Hughes: We switched off

Posted on: Sun 09 Dec 2007

BOSS Mark Hughes felt that his side never really got going and ended up the victims of a 'smash and grab' performance from West Ham at Ewood Park this Sunday afternoon.

A solitary goal from Dean Ashton proved to be the difference between the two sides, a goal that was conceded due to a series of errors from the Rovers defence.

"It wasn't a great day in the office, we are disappointed that we have lost the game," said Hughes on Radio Rovers after the game.

"We had opportunities to win, clear-cut opportunities that on another day would have been taken.

"But we are disappointed obviously with the goal that we have conceded, there are too many errors leading up to the goal, consecutive errors almost always lead to goals so we are disappointed with that."

Despite going behind early on in the second half, Rovers still had chances to get back into the game, but came up against goalkeeper Robert Green in excellent form.

"We were still very much in the game, we still pressed, we still created chances but really today, we never really got any momentum in our play in the first half, we needed to start better than we did. We were better in second half but conceded a poor goal from our point of view and in the end that has cost us.

"We showed good qualities in the second half, I can't fault the players in that respect but at times we make it difficult for ourselves.

"It is a little bit of a 'smash and grab' and we got caught out. We are disappointed because we know we are better than we were able to show today.

"It is a setback, but we need to pick ourselves up and go again, because we are capable of doing so."
