A dominant show - Hughes

Posted on: Sun 02 Sep 2007

ROVERS enhanced their growing reputation with a dominant 1-0 victory over Manchester City at Ewood Park.

Much has been made of Sven-Goran Eriksson's much-changed City team, but they were no match for Mark Hughes' men in a pulsating encounter.

The visitors, who had won their opening three games this season, had little sight of Brad Friedel's goal as the home side controlled the match from start to end, much to the delight of boss Mark Hughes.

"I thought we were excellent, our general play was really dominant," said Hughes on Radio Rovers after the game. "Man City are a good side with individual talent in the team and if you allow them to play the football that they want to play then they have players that will cause you a problem.

"We denied them the opportunity to show how good they were, they've not come up against a team that plays with such a high intensity as we do, so we knew it was part of our game plan, we wanted to test them to see if they could cope.

"We caused them problems and always looked the more likely team to win. I don't think that Brad has had a great deal to do all game and that was even when we were down a man less.

"Overall I thought it was an excellent performance, so many guys could have walked away with the man-of-the-match champagne, back four, midfield, up front, so all-in-all a really satisfying performance by everybody.

"We're a good footballing side and we proved it again today."
