New-look Ladies

Posted on: Fri 27 Aug 2010

Rovers Ladies have got a new-look squad for the 2010-11 Women's Premier League season.

Manager Adam Lakeland has made major changes to the playing personnel over the summer, with a number of the club's senior stars leaving to join teams in the Super League.

Rovers have also welcomed two new signings on board, with striker Levi Penny rejoining from Nottingham Forest and Northern Ireland international Kim Turner (pictured) making the move from Manchester City.

Lakeland said: "We've made quite a lot of changes to the squad over the summer in terms of personnel, which is something I was always keen to do.

"I wanted to reduce the average age of the team, by moving one or two of the older players on and bringing some of the younger ones in, as well as cut the size of the squad from about 18 or 19 down to 15.

"I have to say that the feeling I've got about this current crop of players is probably the best I've had in the four seasons I've been in charge.

"It's a small group, but everybody gets on, no-one thinks they're better than anyone else, there's a good team spirit and the players are very honest and hard working.

"Levi Penny has rejoined us from Nottingham Forest and I'm really happy to have her back. I never wanted her to leave in the first place, but I could completely understand why. She loves her football and wants to play week-in and week-out.

"We've also signed central midfield player Kim Turner from Manchester City. Kim's a Northern Ireland international, who is very fit, good on the ball, intelligent in possession and will bring a lot to the table.

"A few younger players from the reserves have also been pushed up to the first team squad and I'm hoping to bring one more player in before the start of the season.

"We've still got two more weeks of hard work before we kick off against Watford, but I'm quietly confident that if we can get off to a good start, we could surprise a few teams this year."

Hannah Forster, Nicole Foster and Hayley Langford have made the step up from the reserves to the first team, while Natalie Preston, Lynda Shepherd, Danielle Hill, Nicki Harding, Karen Burke, Amy Kane, Lauren Walker and Kate Ward have all left the club.
