Rovers warm up in style
BLACKBURN Rovers Ladies enjoyed a weekend goalfest as they warmed up for the new National Division season.
In their final pre-season friendlies of the summer, Adam Lakeland's side smashed seven past Manchester City at Ladybridge FC, before putting in a five-star performance against Newcastle United just 24 hours later.
Rovers ran out 7-3 winners in Saturday's specially arranged fixture aimed at boosting grassroots football in the Bolton and Bury area, before lifting the Padiham FC Challenge Cup courtesy of a 5-2 win over Newcastle.
Last season's leading scorer Katie Anderton was again amongst the goals, finding the back of the net five times over the two days, whilst Levi Penny chipped in with four.
Lakeland, who will take his team to champions Arsenal on the opening day of the season this Sunday, said: "I would to thank Ladybridge FC for inviting us to take part in the game first and foremost.
"It was a good exercise for us in terms of match practice and any way we can help generate participation in girls football we are happy to oblige.
"We were given a good test by two talented Northern Division teams over the weekend. And whilst it was all about getting vital minutes on the pitch, I was especially happy with the way we kept the ball and with the style of football we tried to play - not to mention the end product."
