Duo at the double

Posted on: Fri 19 Nov 2010

Rovers' under 18s won a enthralling encounter against Derby County 4-3 on Saturday.

Gary Bowyer's side raced into a two-goal lead inside twenty minutes thanks to goals from Tom Hitchcock and Jamie Maclaren, but slack play saw the home side take advantage, netting three times to race into the lead.

But in a pulsating last ten minutes Maclaren and Hitchcock were once again on target to each claim a brace as the under 18s claimed their first win of the 2010-11 season.

The first meaningful attack of the game saw Rovers take the lead. James Knowles did well in the centre of midfield to win the ball and set Jamie Maclaren racing through, he unselfishly squared the ball to Tom Hitchcock and he netted his first goal of the season with a neat finish from five yards.

Four minutes later and it was Hitchcock feeding Maclaren. Matthew Urwin's long ball upfield was flicked on by Hitchcock for his strike partner to run through and double Rovers' lead.

But all that good work was undone in the 21st minute when the home side pulled a goal back. A mis-hit cross catching out Urwin in the Rovers goal and the Derby striker got to the ball first to head home.

Then just before the break Derby were level. Failure to deal with the ball, followed by a slipp by Adam Henley which was taken advantage of as the half ended 2-2.

Moments after the restart Jamie Maclaren showed good pace to break from inside his own half to beat two players and shoot, but the Derby 'keeper made a good save.

However Rovers were once again left to count the cost of defensive lapses as Derby found the back of the net on 53 minutes. A corner into the area saw the Derby attacker left unmarked and he headed home.

The last half hour saw Rovers show the sort of form as seen earlier in the game, ended this encounter strongly.

Substitute Robbie Cotton saw a shot well saved, Maclaren was denied in a one on one situation, then captain Anthony O'Connor saw his header strike the post.

Their persistance was rewarded in the final ten minutes with Hitchcock and Maclaren doing the damage once again.

On 82 Cotton showed great persistance and pressing to block two challenges before feeding Hitchcock and he teed up Maclaren for the finishing touch for his second of the game to see the scores at 3-3.

Then on 87 minutes the turnaround was complete when a forward ball from Adam Henley saw Hitchcock jump ahead of the advancing 'keeper and the ball looped over the Derby man and into the back of the net to spark great scenes of jubilation amongst the Rovers ranks.

Speaking after the game, under 18s coach Gary Bowyer said: "For 20 minutes we were superb but for the rest of the half we stopped doing what we had done so well at the start of the game.

"Then in the final half hour of the second we did what we did right in the first, kept going, showed good character, did our defensive work, made our tackles.

"I'm obviously delighted to have scored four goals and with the spirit that the players showed, but we need to cut out the mistakes defensively."

The under 18s are next in action at home to Sheffield United at Brockhall on Saturday at 11am.
