FA Youth Cup: Rovers 3 Man Utd 0

Posted on: Fri 29 Jan 2010

A BRACE from Jason Lowe and a brave headed goal from Grant Hanley saw Rovers book themselves a place in the FA Youth Cup quarter finals on Thursday evening.

Lowe's first half strike was added to by Hanley in the second before Lowe added his second on the night as Gary Bowyer's side defeated Manchester United 3-0 at Ewood Park.

Their reward for the win is a home match against either Preston North End or Everton in the last eight of the competition.

On a sodden evening at Ewood it was the home side who threatened early, Jason Banton's shot across the bows beaten away by Devlin in the United goal, but as the half wore on it was the visitors who had the upper hand.

Rovers were thankful for a fine save from Josh Swann after Nicholas Ajose picked out Paul Pogba with a free-kick, then Davide Petrucci tricked his way past Jackson Ramm but could only find the roof of the net with his attempted lob.

But United's best chance of the first half came on 32 minutes when from a ball into the area Pogba headed onto Joshua King but he somehow headed wide of goal when it seemed easier to score.

The visitors were made to pay for their missed chances when Rovers took the lead on 38 minutes. Michael Potts delivered from a corner on the right with the ball arriving at the feet of Jason Lowe at the back post and he swept the ball home.

Leading at the break, the home side pressed for a second goal, but they were thwarted by an in form Conor Devlin.

From a Potts free-kick he picked out Grant Hanley, but an instinctive one-handed save from the United youngster denied the Rovers captain.

Then from a Micah Evans cross Tom Hitchcock unleashed a fearsome effort that Devlin did brilliantly to keep out.

For the visitors Wootton headed into the side netting and McGinty sidefooted wide, but they were rare chances for the fancied United.

But Rovers didn't let their heads drop and on continued to press and on 69 they got the second goal their play deserved and again it came from a set-piece.

Michael Potts' free-kick to the back post was powered goalwards by Grant Hanley, his first header was saved by Devlin but the Scot was alert and brave to head the rebound into the back of the net.

Three minutes from time the game was wrapped up when Rovers were awarded a penalty kick after Hitchcock went down in the area after a coming together with Ajose. Hitchcock saw his spot-kick brilliantly saved but a cool Jason Lowe took the rebound under control before firing home.

Five additional minutes were shown, the majority of which were played in the United half as Rovers saw the game out comfortably for an impressive victory.

They will now face a last eight home tie against either Preston North End or Everton.
