Potts paves the way

Posted on: Tue 17 Nov 2009

Rovers' under 18s maintained their impressive start to the season with a 3-0 win away at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

First half goals from Michael Potts and Josh Morris were added to by a second half own goal as Rovers controlled the game to keep their unbeaten run on their travels going.

As early as the first minute Rovers threatened when the lively Josh Morris saw his shot well saved.

Then on 9 Bolton almost handed Rovers the lead when a poor backpass was pounced upon by Tom Hitchcock but he failed to capitalise on the opportunity.

Jason Banton saw an effort blocked, whilst from a one-two between Jordan Bowen and Potts the ball was teed up to Morris but he took one touch too many and the chance was gone.

Rovers continued to pepper the Bolton back line, Morris sent over a cross that was met brilliantly by Hitchcock but his head went inches over.

The Morris himself went closer, but his shot from outside the box hit the crossbar.

But just as it looked like Rovers wouldn't be rewarded for their endeavours, they grabbed the lead on 37 minutes.

A short corner routine saw the ball played to Potts on the edge of the box and he rifled home from 20 yards.

The visitors then extended their lead on the stroke of half time from yet another corner. This time it was Potts who found Morris and he advanced into the area to cooly slot home.

In contrast to the first half, Rovers certainly didn't have it all their own way in the second.

Defensively Rovers were dealt a blow as Andy Parry limped off on 52 minutes, but Cameron Lindsay, fresh from his exploits with New Zealand in the under 17 World Cup, was a more than able replacement alongside Anthony O'Connor at the back as Rovers had to weather a second half onslaught from Bolton.

Josh Swann making one particularly impressive save down to his left to keep Bolton at bay.

But despite this, on 72 minutes the points were wrapped up as Rovers added their third of the day.

Full back Damilola Ajagbe raced down the right to centre with Tom Hitchcock making enough of a nuisance of himself to ensure that the defender put the ball in the back of his own net.

The victory means Rovers continue to top their group table.
