Crewe hit for six

Posted on: Mon 02 Nov 2009

Rovers' under 18s got back to winning ways in fine style with a 6-2 demolition of Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.

Gary Bowyer's young side have had a fortnight to mull over the loss to Liverpool last time out, but those memories were quickly banished with an impressive display.

Striker Tom Hitchcock (pictured) continued his fine goalscoring form with a hat-trick whilst Jason Banton hit a brace to add to Andy Parry's opener in a win that sees Rovers continue to lead their Academy group.

The visitors started the match brightly, creating a whole host of chances in the opening exchanges.

On four minutes from a Micah Evans centre Josh Morris put his effort narrowly wide, whilst Jordan Bowen saw a shot saved.

Then Rovers found the back of the net on 11 minutes when Jason Banton crossed for Tom Hitchcock to head home but it was incorrectly ruled offside.

The deadlock was finally broken on 13 minutes when the constant Rovers pressure eventually told. Jordan Bowen's centre picked out Andy Parry who ghosted into the area to head home for his second goal of the season.

Rovers' attacking play continued to trouble the home side, Micah Evans saw his shot well saved after Banton's defence splitting pass, whilst the impressive Evans centred for Hitchcock but he headed wide.

Two goals in two minutes saw Rovers get the goals their play deserved. On 29 minutes a Josh Morris corner was emphatically headed home by Tom Hitchcock.

Moments later and Hitchcock was on target again, Jason Banton the provider to allow a simple tap-in at the back post for his strike partner.

But for all their dominance, Rovers blotted their copybook just before the break when a mix-up between Grant Hanley and goalkeeper Josh Swann allowed Crewe to reduce arrears with a headed goal.

The second half saw Rovers regain their composure, Jason Banton seeing his shot hacked off the line moments after the restart.

But he didn't have long to wait for his eighth goal of the season when on 52 minutes when in a one on one position he raced past the defender before shooting left-footed across the goalkeeper to make it 4-1.

Banton then made it a fine brace with Rovers fifth and his second of the day, cutting in from the left to smash home with his right foot.

But just like the first half slack marking at the back allowed Crewe to grab a consolation. A poorly defended free-kick seeing the home side make it 5-2.

Chances at the other end continued to flow, James Knowles headed wide when it seemed easier to score, whilst Tom Hitchcock missed an open goal.

But the game was wrapped up with a minute left on the clock, a great run by Jason Bowen saw him cross for Tom Hitchcock and he claimed his hat-trick with a header from close-range.

"The finishing was emphatic," said Gary Bowyer. "The players have set their own standards and we were disappointed to have conceded two sloppy goals."

"But it was good to get back to the winning habit."
