Trio's Euro adventures

Posted on: Sat 17 Oct 2009

Three of Rovers' up and coming players were away with their respective countries this week.

Defender Grant Hanley was with the Scotland under 19s as they successfully negotiated their UEFA Under 19 qualification stage in Austria with two wins from their three games.

Scotland started their campaign with an impressive 3-0 win over Romania, and followed that up by hammering Armenia 6-1 in Feldkirchen.

But in their third group game they lost 1-0 to hosts Austria, but they progressed through as Group leaders despite Scotland, Romania and Austria all finishing Group 6 on six points.

Hanley played the full ninety minutes in all three games.

Over in Antalya the Republic of Ireland under 18s had two matches against Turkey. Fellow Academy defender Anthony O'Connor impressed at the back despite them going down 4-1 on Tuesday.

Thursday saw the two sides face each other once again, and whilst Ireland fared better, they lost the match 2-1.

Again, O'Connor played the full ninety in both games.

On under 17 duty was striker Toni Vastić for Austria as they had three qualifying matches in Poland.

They kicked off their campaign with an impressive 4-2 win over hosts Poland, before Vastić found the back of the net as the Austrians defeated Israel 2-0 in Pruszkow.

Their final Group 4 game saw them face Armenia, and although they were held to a 1-1 draw, they qualified for the next stage as table toppers.

Vastić started all three of the Austrian's matches.
