Evans' double defeats City slickers

Posted on: Thu 15 Oct 2009

Rovers' under 18s claimed the honours over Manchester City in a seven-goal thriller on Saturday.

Gary Bowyer's young charges went into the game off the back of a seven game unbeaten run, and that was stretched to eight courtesy of a last-gasp 4-3 win.

Rovers were slow out of the blocks at Brockhall, with the visiting City side on top in the early exchanges.

But it was Rovers who took the lead on 21 minutes when a cross from Jordan Bowen from the right dropped perfectly for Josh Morris and he smashed a left-foot strike home from 15 yards.

Rovers were in the lead for just five minutes when failure to deal with a cross from the right saw the City striker beat Jackson Ramm at the back post to equalise.

Then on the stroke of half-time City, coached by former Rover Scott Sellars, made it 2-1 when the home side were caught on the hop by a swift counter attack for City to score. It was the first time this season that the under 18s found themselves behind.

That, however, was to change ten minutes after the restart when Rovers pulled level. A good passing interchange involving Jordan Bowen, Micah Evans and Tom Hitchcock resulted in Evans slotting home the rebound for his first goal of the season.

On 72 minutes Rovers then claimed the lead once again, the impressive Evans this time turning provider to centre for Tom Hitchcock to head home. It was the young striker's third goal in a week.

However the lead didn't last long as City broke down the other end and defender Jackson Ramm, who made his first team debut on Tuesday evening in the friendly match against Accrington, scythed down his man in the area and City converted from the spot.

On 88 minutes Rovers thought they had wasted an ideal opportunity to win the game when substitute Matthew Pearson somehow blazed over from just two yards out.

But deep into injury time Rovers' never-say-die spirit told and when Jordan Bowen broke he played a fantastic pass to the onrushing Micah Evans and the former Manchester City schoolboy bent a superb effort into the back of the net.

There was barely time for play to restart before the referee blew for full time.

After the match, under 18s coach Gary Bowyer said: "The game was a great advert for youth football. Both teams were playing competitive football as well as good passing games.

"We were slow to get going in the first half when Manchester City were the better team, but we finished strong.

"I'm delighted with the player's attitude and character, but more importantly delighted with the football that they played.

"A special mention for Jackson Ramm as I'm delighted for him being involved in the first team for the first time in the friendly match against Accrington.

"With the relationship we have with the Reserves it is a great time to be a young Blackburn Rovers player and should prove to be a huge incentive to all the players we have here."

Rovers are next in action this Saturday 17th October when Liverpool are the visitors to Brockhall, kick-off 11.00am.
