Rovers under 18's got their 2009-10 season off to a winning start with a hard-fought victory over Chelsea.
Against a highly rated Chelsea side, Rovers had to battle hard in a match of few goalscoring opportunities, but it was Rovers who took theirs with Andy Parry scoring his first goal for the Academy with four minutes remaining.
The first half saw Rovers contain their opponents, restricting them in the final third, whilst at the other end, Tom Hitchcock saw a fine volley well saved, whilst Michael Potts fired narrowly over the bar.
Rovers came plan to keep the game tight frustrated the opposition, with the defensive back line marshalled brilliantly by central defender Grant Hanley.
All their hard work came to fruition with four minutes remaining when from a Josh Morris free kick on the left, Andy Parry arrived in the box to bundle the ball home.
Chelsea threw everything at the Rovers defence to claim a point in the final few moments, but the young Rovers players blocked everything that came their way and 'keeper Jake Kean stood strong to ensure they held on to claim the points.
"The lads showed tremendous spirit and followed the game plan," said Gary Bowyer.
"They were disciplined and showed a fantastic attitude to defending and we managed to pinch a goal at the other end.
"Over all I was pleased with their determination against a very good Chelsea side."
