With an eye towards next season, coach David Lowe put out a squad almost entirely of Under-17s and Under-16s against a strong Liverpool outfit.
The first half saw the visitors take advantage of the new look Rovers as they raced into a four-goal lead.
It was a opening 45 where Rovers didn't deserve to be four down, enjoying several passages of play, but they couldn't take advantage of the chances presented to them.
Liverpool soon added a fifth early in the second half, but from then on a spirited display from the home side merited more but they couldn't get the goals their play deserved.
"From a development point of view it was a fantastic experience for our lads," said David Lowe.
"We decided to go with an Under-17 side to give them a feel for youth team football.
"To be fair we didn't deserve to be four down at half-time, the stats show that, but we have to get the basics of defending properly and taking chances right.
"It was a good learning curve for the lads and will continue to be so from now until the end of the season."
