Women's Premier League Northern Division
Rovers Ladies 4-1 Wolves
Rovers Ladies shot up to second in the Northern Division table with a 4-1 win at home to Wolves.
Goals from Vicky Westerman, Nicky Twohig, Evie Manning and Shannon Weston helped secure a fourth straight league victory for Andy Ramskill’s side.
Wolves started the brighter of the two teams, with Gemma Jackson forced to punch away a free-kick early on.
Rovers soon got into their stride, with Nichol Forster seeing a shot pushed around the post, before Sophie Flynn fired high and wide.
A Forster ball across the face of goal then came to nothing, before Steph Marsh and Jade Boulton both blazed over.
As the half-time interval approached, Forster struck the post, with the ball bouncing straight back into the goalkeeper’s hands, before Rovers eventually made the breakthrough. Marsh whipped in a free-kick and Westerman got up well to head home.
Rovers’ lead didn’t last long however, as Wolves equalised shortly after the restart. A poor back pass was seized upon by the Wolves striker, who rounded Jackson before slotting the ball past Emily Farrell on the line.
Rovers soon regained the ascendancy. A Twohig free-kick bounced back off the Wolves keeper, who then denied Keeleigh Savage on the follow-up.
A Farrell strike was then tipped over the bar, before the hosts were handed the chance to restore their lead from the spot. Weston was dragged down inside the box at a corner and Twohig duly dispatched the resultant penalty.
The Rovers skipper then fired a free-kick straight into the wall and Manning’s cross-shot just cleared the bar, before Rovers added a third when a mix-up in the Wolves defence allowed Manning to nip in and score.
In the closing stages, Weston switched play to Forster, who fired wide, before Weston weighed in with the goal of the game – a stunning 25-yard strike that flew in off the underside of the bar.
Ramskill said: “I am absolutely delighted to keep the unbeaten run going. The players have shown hard work and a great attitude to grind out the results in each game. Hopefully that can continue and we can claim second spot in the league.
“We’ve got two big games to go – Newcastle away and then Sporting Club Albion at Ewood Park – and I’ll be looking for the same passion and desire to win those games as well.”
