The Rovers boss was pleased with the way his side coped under pressure against Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday evening, but believes there are many areas that need to be improved.
"I still think we can be much better in possession of the ball at times, some of our decision making wasn't great," said Appleton after the Brighton game.
"I think that in our next few games we'll make better decisions in the opposition's half than we have done tonight.
"There were a couple of players in possession of the ball who had a poor evening.
"I've only been in the football club six or seven weeks, we need to be better in the final third, much better than we were against Brighton."
