Tim Payne started for New Zealand, who lost 4-2 to the United Arab Emirates in their final friendly ahead of the London Olympics.
The Rovers starlet played the full 90 minutes for the Oly Whites, who found themselves two goals down by the midway point in the first half.
The Kiwis pulled one back shortly before half-time when Shane Smeltz headed home Ryan Nelsen’s flick and the scores were level seven minutes after the break when Marco Rojas fired home.
But UAE restored their advantage from the penalty spot, before securing the win 10 minutes from time.
Tim will hope to have done enough to earn a starting berth when the Oly Whites get their tournament underway against Belarus on July 26th. Neil Emblen’s side will also meet Brazil and Egypt in Group C.
