Ewood Park plays host to the opening match of the 2014-15 Sky Bet
Championship this Friday night when they take on the Bluebirds in the 7.45pm kick-off.
Rovers ended the last campaign as one of the form teams of the Championship, and the manager knows that they need to start this season as they ended the last.
"I think you saw the momentum towards we had at the end of last season and what it can do," said Bowyer.
"The spirit and the character, how it can bring the group even tighter, so we've got to make sure that we are competitive in our first couple of games and get a run going
"I think you saw last season that if you can get a run going early then it gives you momentum throughout the season and that is something that we'll be striving to do.
"It is a tough championship so we are fully aware of the challenge that lies ahead."
Rovers just missed out on a top six finish last season, their 12-match unbeaten run seeing them end just two points off the play-offs, so expectancy is high amongst the supporters for the new campaign.
"We are in it to be competitive," added the manager. "The staff and the players, we want to strive to be as good as we can be.
"They are the demands that we put on ourselves and put on the players. We've got to get better than what we were last season.
"If that means we've to deal with the expectancy then that is what we'll have to deal with."
