Rovers were made to work hard for the points against a lively Barnsley side on Tuesday evening.
The unbeaten record remains intact but only after grinding out a victory courtesy of strikes from Jordan Rhodes and Nuno Gomes.
Speaking to Radio Rovers after the match Rovers boss Steve Kean admitted his side were well below what was expected of them.
"I thought we were far from our best tonight," admitted Kean.
"In the first half we didn't get our passing going, we didn't get really get any flow the way we normally play and i felt frustrated as we all did but fair play to the fans they stuck with us because I felt we were really below par and I let the lads know that at half time.
"I thought we had a better response at half time and when you've got special players that can make something out of nothing like Jordan Rhodes, he gets a goal from nothing to put us back in the game.
"Then the two substitutes that came on had a good impact and Fabio goes on the outside and crosses a great early ball and Nuno ghosts in like we know he can and finds the net.
"We needed special players to produce at times and on the night they did.
"I didn't think we were at all at our best tonight, we were way below par.
"You set your own standards and we've said our standards way above what we've produced tonight but we've won and I think that is the sign of a good side, not playing well but digging a result out."
