The Rovers midfielder has been out of action since limping out of the Sheffield Wednesday match just over a month ago.
Troubled by a calf injury, the Great Harwood-born player has been stepping up his fitness and could be back in time for the East Lancs derby at Turf Moor this Sunday lunchtime.
"David Dunn would like to be fit for the Burnley game so he is very close," said the Rovers boss.
"He knows what this is about, and I think all the players will do to.
"He is a local lad but I'm not afraid that he will lose his head and be too emotional, Dunny, as a player, he has qualities who can change games and if he's fit on Sunday, we will not get a 90 minute player, but if available to play for 15-20 minutes then maybe that can be the right decision to put him on the bench.
"We'll have to see, he's not fully back yet, but he has to be 100% fit and injury free to be able to participate.
"He's a good lad, he's got some very very good qualities and we want all our players to be ready for that game."
Rovers have sold out their ticket allocation for this game, whilst the beam-back at Ewood Park has also sold out.
