Only Anthony O'Connor saw action for his country as internationals took place on Friday evening.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 defender, who is currently on loan with League Two side Torquay United, featured for the full 90 minutes for the Irish as they played out a goalless draw with Romania in Piatra Neamt.

The two sides meet again this Tuesday in Sligo. Ireland are currently third in Group 6 with a win, a draw and a defeat from their three games played so far, five points behind leders Germany.

In Baku, Corry Evans watched on from the substitutes bench as Northern Ireland were surprisingly defeated 2-0 by Azerbaijan in their penultimate World Cup qualifier.

The Rovers man played no part for Michael O'Neill's as second half goals saw the hosts triumph and leap-frog the Irish in the Group F table.

Evans will be hoping to be involved in Northern Ireland's final match this Tuesday away in Israel.

Also not involved on Friday night was Rovers wideman Joshua King as Norway also tasted defeat.

The Norwegians went into the game against Slovenia in Maribor still with a chance of reaching the play-offs for next summer's finals. But a 3-0 away loss ruled out any prospect of qualification.

That means there is only pride to play for when Norway face 2nd place Iceland in Oslo on Tuesday night, whilst their opponents will be going all out to secure a play-off spot.
