Premier League Cup (Last 16)
Wolves 0-2 Rovers Ladies
Rovers Ladies booked their place in the last eight of the Women's Premier League Cup courtesy of a 2-0 win away to Wolves.
Second-half strikes from Keeleigh Savage and Nichol Forster secured a quarter-final tie against Aston Villa.
After last weekend's disappointing draw at home to Newcastle, Rovers started much brighter, dominating possession and moving the ball around well.
Scott Rogers' side gave Wolves an early warning when Danielle Cox got in down the right and flashed a ball across the box, but no-one was able to get on the end of it.
Rovers continued to press and a clever ball from Lagan Makin saw Savage go through one-on-one, but a Wolves defender made an excellent last-ditch tackle.
The visitors were in complete control, with further chances falling to Forster and then Savage, but both players fired just wide.
Wolves’ only real opportunity of the first half came from a corner, but Gemma Jackson dealt with it well and just before the break, Makin had a good effort easily saved by Jackson's opposite number.
Rovers came flying out of the blocks at the start of the second half, with Kim Turner firing just over after linking up well with Makin and Savage.
The visitors didn’t have long to wait for the opening goal, after a great ball from Rhiannon Roberts picked out Savage, who rifled the ball into the roof of the net.
Rovers looked eager to kill the game off early, as Makin fired just wide of the post, before Cox cut in from the right and forced a smart save from the Wolves keeper.
The second goal eventually arrived on 70 minutes, as Rovers robbed Wolves of the ball and broke with devastating effect. Cox was played in, before crossing for the arriving Forster to coolly finish.
Rovers controlled possession in the closing stages, with substitute Evie Manning unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet.
Manager Scott Rogers said: "Today was a good day for us. Before I talk about the game, I must thank Wolves for the tremendous support they showed in allowing us to give Emma McDougall a minute’s applause and the efforts they went to in order for it to run so smoothly.
"The game itself was very pleasing. We controlled it from start to finish. It was an opportunity for some of the girls to prove a point to me and I thought they worked really hard for each other and deserved the win.
"I am obviously very pleased to be in the quarter-finals of the League Cup, however we now have to focus our attentions back on the league, as we have a very tough fixture against Nottingham Forest coming up."
