Preston North End 0-5 Rovers Ladies
Premier League Cup (Group Game 2)
Sunday September 23rd, 2012
Rovers Ladies thrashed Preston North End 5-0 to maintain their 100% start to the Premier League Cup competition.
Beth Donoghue and Nichol Forster scored two goals apiece as Rovers romped to victory in their second group game.
Rovers dominated from start to finish and could have won by a much bigger margin. Despite dictating the play, it was Preston who had the first effort on goal, as some sloppy defending led to their full-back striking the bar.
It was one-way traffic from then on, as Rovers pinned and pressed Preston back in their own half, before eventually breaking the deadlock on 15 minutes through Lagan Makin.
Keeleigh Savage struck the bar shortly after and the Preston goalkeeper had to make several fine saves to prevent Rovers from running away with it.
Rovers eventually added a second five minutes before the break when Donoghue cut in from the right, breezed past the Preston defence and slotted home.
Strikes from Kim Turner and Katie Anderton went high and wide, as Rovers maintained their superiority right up until half-time.
The pattern continued straight from the restart, with Rovers adding a third on 55 minutes through Donoghue, who slid the ball home after being played in on goal.
Anderton saw a strike tipped round the post and Preston cleared the resulting corner, before Nichol Forster somehow failed to connect cleanly with the goal at her mercy. She did eventually get the fourth on 70 minutes with a back-heeled flick into the bottom corner, before completing the rout five minutes before full time with a swerving strike from just outside the box.
Manager Scott Rogers said: “This was a good game to get back to winning ways. Preston rested one or two players, but at the end of the day it is a local derby and we treated it exactly that way.
“You can only beat the team in front of you and we comprehensively did that. It was one of the most one-sided matches I’ve seen for a while.
“We controlled the tempo of the game from start to finish and we now need to start building towards getting another good run together, which I'm confident we will do.”
