Rovers Ladies Reserves suffered their first league defeat of the season away to a strong Leicester City side.

On a poor surface, both sides struggled to get into any rhythm, with scrappy periods of play throughout the first half.

Rovers looked the more likely to open the scoring and troubled Leicester from a couple of corners, which were somehow cleared off the line, as Leicester rode their luck to go in level at the break.

Rovers started the second half in a better fashion, but failed to find that cutting edge, and were made to pay on 56 minutes.

A free-kick from the edge of the box looped over the wall and was parried by Carina Fuller in the Rovers goal, only for substitute Bethany Goodman to react first and slot the ball home.

Leicester doubled their lead less than 10 minutes later when a cross from the right wasn't dealt with and Kimberley Farrow couldn't miss from close range.

Rovers pulled a goal back on 72 minutes, as neat play down the right between Evie Manning and Amy Bland found Jade Boulton, whose driven shot across goal deceived the keeper and nestled in the far corner.

Buoyed by the goal, the visitors went in search of an equaliser and again threatened from set-plays, but somehow Leicester held on for the three points.

Manager Zac Foley said: “On the whole, I felt we deserved at least a point from this game.

“When we found out Leicester had sent their first team we took it as a compliment and relished the challenge.

“It was a scrappy game throughout and we struggled to retain the ball and get any kind of rhythm going to our play.

“We were guilty of trying to force the ball too often in crucial areas. Both goals could have been avoided, but Carina has deputised in goal for us for the last two weeks and has done a magnificent job.

“We have to look at the positives, which were we matched a first team for 90 minutes and the way they celebrated at the end shows how close we pushed them. We now have to bounce back with a result next weekend at Coventry.”
