Rovers Under-18s completed a league double over Manchester United with a 4-2 win at Carrington on Saturday.

When the two sides met at Brockhall just before Christmas David Lowe's side ran out 3-1 winners and although Rovers fielded a much younger team on this occasion, they claimed victory once more.

Rovers were dealt a blow before the match had even started when goalkeeper Callum Williams was unwell during the warm-up, that meant a first start for Under-16 stopper Andrew Fisher.

In terrible conditions it was Rovers who grabbed the impetus with two first half goals. Sam Joel opening the scoring on 29 minutes, curling home a free-kick from outside the box.

On the stroke of half-time Rovers doubled their advantage, Modou Cham taking on his full back before cutting inside and finishing well with a right-footed shot.

But the start of the second half saw the home side reduce arrears when Rovers were caught trying to play out from the back and Marcus Rashford took advantage of a sloppy pass to make it 2-1.

However Rovers soon restored their two-goal advantage thanks to fine goal from Luke Wall on 56. The young striker grabbing his second of the campaign with a excellent left-footed finish high into the net.

The home side were then reduced to ten men for a foul on Modou Cham, but another defensive lapse saw United make it 3-2. Sean Goss, shooting from distance, saw his shot squeeze under debutant Fisher and into the back of the net.

Ten-man United pressed for an equaliser but it was Rovers who grabbed the sixth goal. Sam Joel finishing the match off with a fine finish for his second of the game.

"It was another very young team with Under-15s on the bench due to injuries," said coach David Lowe.

"It was a very satisfying performance against a very good team. They were difficult conditions for both teams but we played the conditions well.

"We are starting to bed these guys in now and this is a big opportunity for them to get a feel for Under-18s football.

"Hopefully this win should give them plenty of confidence for the remainder of the season."
