The Under-21s acquitted themselves well against highly-rated opposition but a goal in each half saw the visitors triumph at Leigh Sports Village.
Rovers had plenty of possession and opportunities but the more clinical finishing from Villa proved to be the difference.
"I was disappointed with the result because i thought in the scheme of things we did quite well," Colin Hendry told Rovers Player
"They are a decent side Villa, they have just recently won the NextGen series, I said to Gordon Cowans (Aston Villa's development coach) before the game that it would be a big test for our boys.
"I thought we acquitted ourselves really well but that little bit of quality shone through for them in the final third.
"We had a lot of good half chances and possession around their box but we just couldn't convert one.
"I changed a few things around and I felt it worked aside from not being able to find the back of the net."
Rovers are back in action next Monday night when they take on Sunderland at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground.
