The Scotland international, who is closing in on 100 appearances for the club, will serve a three-match suspension after being shown a straight red card with just a third of the game gone at the DW Stadium.
The 21-year-old, who was handed the captain’s armband for the game in the absence of skipper Scott Dann, will now miss the forthcoming Championship fixtures against Charlton Athletic, Blackpool and Middlesbrough.
“Grant has been in to see me this morning to apologise to the staff, his team-mates and to the fans for his actions,” said Bowyer.
“He was absolutely distraught after the game as he felt he had let everyone down.
“He has enjoyed a fantastic rapport with the supporters since breaking into the first team three years ago and he doesn’t want that relationship to be tarnished.
“He has held his hands up, accepted his punishment and will be cheering the lads on from the sidelines at the next three games.”
