Rovers lose 3-2 at home to Everton.

Rovers' Under-18s slipped to a disappointing 3-2 defeat at home to Everton at Brockhall on Saturday.

It had started brightly for the young Rovers in the Lancashire sunshine with Bradley Ware scoring after just four minutes. The midfielder getting to Ryan Thompson's header back across goal to nod home from close-range.

Early substitute Callum Harris should have doubled Rovers' advantage on 24 minutes when Ryan Humphreys played him through, but having been on the pitch for just two minutes Harris saw his effort saved at the near post.

Rovers would regret that missed chance as the visitors scored from the very next attack. George Green picking out the forward run of Joe William and he fired past debutant Aidan Grant in the Rovers goal.

The home side looked to hit back before the break, Antonie Boland seeing a header from a Tom Brown corner tipped over, Harris saw a shot turned wide, before Ware could only find the roof of the net from another Brown set-piece.

Two goals in two minutes just past the hour mark saw Everton complete their comeback and put daylight between the two sides. On 60 minutes a ball over the top saw Toffees captain Chris Long claim possession before beating Sam Lavelle and scoring into the corner of the goal.

90 seconds later and it was 3-1 to Everton as a series of defensive errors combined to give the visitors the advantage and Long grabbed his second of the game.

That prompted a double change from Under-18s boss Terry McPhillips as Jordan Preston and Modou Cham were introduced, but it was the visitors who looked likely to score, Long denied his hat-trick by a fine save from Grant.

With 11 minutes to go Rovers were handed a chance to get back into the game after a Ryan Thompson shot was handled in the area. Tom Brown stepped up to take the penalty but Everton 'keeper Mateusz Taudul saved the low shot diving to his right.

Rovers continued to press and probe and grabbed what proved to be a consolation goal deep into stoppage time at the end of the match, Ryan Humphreys getting his third of the season from close-range after Danny Laverty's centre was missed by Cham.
