20,000 fans saw a pulsating match at Ewood Park, with Tommy Spurr's first half strike settling the match in Rovers' favour.
"It was a great win," Bowyer told Radio Rovers after the game. "it was another game in the Championship where it is competitive and very difficult to call.
"You only have to look at some of the other results in the Championship today to know that it is a tough, tough league.
"We were up against a Leeds team that were very direct, they play it very well and we had to deal with that.
"So credit to our boys because they stood up to it, they were heading balls and blocking balls and then at times they played some good stuff as well.
"They had the bravery to get the ball down and play, so for everybody concerned it was a fantastic effort."
The only goal of the game came on the stroke of half-time as the unlikely figure of Tommy Spurr who swept home David Dunn's corner kick.
"It was a great ball in and a great goal. It is our first corner that we have scored from this season.
"We have discussions of how we go about set-plays and there's a lot of banter between Terry McPhillips and the lads because he makes the do them continuously, so today we have reaped the rewards."
Bowyer also praised the home support as they roared their heroes onto victory.
"During the game our fans were excellent and they needed to be because there were 6800 Leeds fans.
"But full credit to our fans they were excellent.
"It was important that we got a win and now we have got to try and carry that on into Tuesday's game.
"Ipswich is a tough place to go, they've won again today, so we've got to recover quickly and get ready for them."
