Craig Short hopes that his experience of getting out of the Championship can help Rovers have a successful season.

As the players returned to Brockhall this morning to begin their pre-season preparations, the former Rovers defender wants to pass on his knowledge of the division of what is required to get promoted.

The first team coach knows that the players will be all the wiser after last season's exploits, but insists that they will only prosper through hard work over the 46 games.

"When I first joined Blackburn as a player we had just been relegated," Short told Rovers Player.

"We thought we'd bounce back straight away, but we didn't. But in the second season we got to grips with things.

"I do think it is a bit of a shock when you drop down. It was a shock for me that year when I first came here because I looked at the squad and thought that we'd cruise through this division and I think every player back then thought the same.

"I think it has probably been a shock for the lads here when they were relegated because the Championship is so competitive. When we got promoted in our second season I remember our captain, Garry Flitcroft, saying it was the hardest season of his life.

"Fortunately I've been promoted out of this league as a player three times and every single one of those seasons was physically and mentally draining. It is a war of attrition really.

"We need to get back to the old values of the badge on the shirt - arte et labore - to work really hard and contest for everything for 46 games. We are under no illusions as to how tough it is going to be.

"I'm pretty sure that the players now, after seeing what they saw last year, won't be in for as much of a shock and be a bit more successful this year."
