Lee Williamson sustained ankle ligament damage in Tuesday's loss to Hull City whilst Dickson Etuhu picked up a knee injury once again in training.
This has left the Rovers boss short of options in the centre of the park so he may use the loan window once more to add to his options.
"I think we have to strengthen in midfield," admitted Appleton. "There are certain areas of the field that we've been looking at to recruit over the last couple of months or so.
"But obviously with what has happened this week with Lee and Dickson I think we are pretty short in that midfield berth.
"You've only got to look and see that David Dunn has been out for five or six weeks with a calf injury so we are down to the bare bones, we've only Jason Lowe, Danny Murphy and Morten who can drop in there at times.
"So we are a little bit short, it is something we need to look at."
Rovers are back in action on Saturday when Leeds United are the visitors to Ewood Park. Tickets are on sale to those supporters with a database history of purchasing Rovers tickets. Priced from £19 for Adults, £12 Seniors and just £1 for Juniors.
