New Zealand got off the to worst possible start in their FIFA Under-20 World Cup finals with a 3-0 loss to Uzbekistan.

Rovers midfielder Tim Payne played the full match for the Junior All Whites, but a goal from Makhstaliev in the first half, followed by strikes from Sergeev and Turapov in the second gave the Uzbeks a comfortable victory.

If New Zealand are to harbour any hopes of reaching the second stage in Turkey they'll have to defeat Uruguay in their second group match this Wednesday. The Uruguayans lost their opening match 1-0 to Croatia on Sunday.
