The former fans favourite has rejoined the club on a 93-day loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur and boss Appleton is delighted to have him here.
"I'm delighted to bring him here, he brings a lot of quality to the club," said the Rovers boss. "He's got great feet, got great experience, and he knows the club inside out.
"He'll certainly be a good addition in tight the games that we have. Games that are 0-0 going into the 70th minute and you are asking for someone on the pitch to produce a little bit of quality, I think he's got that up his sleeve."
Bentley joined Rovers on Friday and was quickly thrust into the thick of the FA Cup 24 hours later, against the side he started his career with, Arsenal. Playing his part in Rovers' famous 1-0 victory.
And although Appleton was quick to give Bentley his second debut, the Rovers boss believes he isn't quite up to full match fitness just yet.
"He's done a lot of training but he's not had a lot of football, he hasn't played a game for a while," explained Appleton.
"So how far away is he from a start? I'm not too sure. We'll assess him over the next day or so and I'll have a good chat with him.
"I think he wants to prove that he's still got plenty in the tank, he's still got plenty of ability.
"David is a fans favourite, he had a fantastic time here when he was last at the football club. I'm sure that they'll get behind him and if they are getting behind him then they are getting behind the team."
