Promising young goalkeepers Matty Urwin and David Raya have returned to the UK with a spring in their step after being invited on the first team trip to Portugal.

The talented teenagers spent a week with the senior squad at their warm weather training base in the Algarve and insist that working with Jake Kean and Simon Eastwood, as well as goalkeeping coach John Keeley, on a daily basis will only benefit their game.

Matty, 19, who was on the bench for Rovers’ final fixture of the 2012-13 season away at Birmingham, said: “You thrive upon being with the first team lads and it’s a great experience.

“We’ve been working really hard and it’s good to be around the lads and John, learning every day off them in training.

“John’s really enthusiastic and that oozes out of us as well. He points out certain things that we need to work on and hopefully we can turn that into our strengths in the future.

“I feel like my shape and technique have come on leaps and bounds since I started working with John, and we learn off Jake and Easty’s experience as well. They’re good lads to be around and we have a good laugh with them.

“Jake did really well last year and you always look at things, like maybe I might get the chance to go out on loan. You never know what might happen this season, you just have to look forward to it.

“Hopefully I’ll play the majority of the games for the Reserves and just carry on pushing the lads forward, but I’d also like to go out on loan somewhere this season, because I think that would be good for me and you never know what might come of it.

“My time nearly ran out last season, it could have gone either way, so I’m really glad that I got a new deal and I’m just going to push myself every day in training and in matches to get another one.”

Barcelona-born David, 17, who joined Rovers from Spanish side Cornella last summer, said: “I’m enjoying it a lot, because it’s my first chance to be with first team players. I’m from Spain, so I’m used to the heat!

“All the players have made me feel very welcome, so that has given me a lot of confidence.

“It’s amazing to learn from the other goalkeepers and to compare yourself with them. I can do things now that I couldn’t do before.

“John is a very good coach and he motivates every single player, and the goalkeeping group is good fun. We are like a union. It’s a very good club and I’m enjoying myself a lot.”
